Puffed Rice Upma

Puffed Rice (Murumura) is a type of puffed grain made from rice, commonly used for breakfast cereal or snack foods, and served as a popular street food in India. This is a quick and easy breakfast recipe with ingredients that are readily available in your pantry. We can add vegetables if needed to make it more healthy.

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
  • ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 10 curry leaves
  • ½ teaspoon ginger, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup raw peanuts
  • ½ cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup green peas
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 small tomato, roughly chopped
  • 6 cups puffed rice
  • 2 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • salt as needed

  • To start making Puffed rice/Murumura upma, heat up a pan with a tablespoon of oil. Once oil heats up, add mustard seeds. Let it splatter. Add cumin seeds, curry leaves, peanuts and sauté for 1 minute on low flame.

  • Add onions with a little salt, ginger and green chilies, sauté until transparent. Add peas, turmeric powder, tomatoes and cook for 5 minutes, check salt and switch off.

  • Add Murmura to a colander. Run the colander under the water and let it get wet from all sides. Keep the wet murumura aside and let it get soaked by itself.

  • Add wet murumura, coriander leaves, lemon juice and stir everything together.

  • Serve immediately for breakfast or snack.
